Description

PostgreSQL 15 is supported until 2027, but the upgrade gets harder the longer we wait. In-place major upgrade on RDS, with a fresh standby.

Steps

  1. Notice to customers' IT 7 days before (CS sends).
  2. identity-service read-only; notifier queues mail.
  3. Snapshot, upgrade, analyse, smoke tests (password sign-in, a SAML test depot, a request and its decision).
  4. Out of read-only. New standby.

Way back

Restore the snapshot taken at step 3. Costs the window, loses nothing (read-only).
